The companies watered down their milk and added melamine (which looks like protein) to meet the nutrient requirements.In China, cows are mostly raised on small family farms. The farmers who sell small amount of milk to the milk collecting stations. Then the milk collecting stations sell the milk to the milk companies in large quantities. Somehow, the milk collecting stations' owners learned a little chemistry, and they found out melamine can fool the readings of the protein test.
So they not only add large amount of water into the milk to increase its volume, but also add the harmful melamine to get pass the quality check of milk company., in the latest fallout from the toxic milk scandal which has killed four Chinese infants and made 53,000 others there ill.
